Emmanuel Macron

Russia is open to negotiations with the Ukrainian side, despite “inconsistency and unpreparedness” representatives of Kyiv to serious work. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, the Kremlin press service reports.

“The President of Russia outlined the principled approaches to negotiating with Ukrainian representatives”, — the message says.

EU countries ignore “crimes of Ukrainian security forces” and their massive shelling of cities and towns in the Donbass, Putin said during the conversation, expressing confidence that Western states are able to make efforts to “stop these atrocities.” The Russian president noted that this could be achieved by “having an appropriate impact on the Kyiv authorities, as well as stopping arms supplies to Ukraine,” the Kremlin said.

Putin also told his French counterpart about «about the liberation of Mariupol» and spoke about the process of evacuating civilians from the territory of the Azovstal metallurgical plant.

Macron, during the conversation, expressed concern about the “emerging problem of ensuring global food security.” In response, Putin said that this situation is aggravated primarily because of international sanctions against Russia. The President of Russia also pointed out the importance of the smooth functioning of the global transport and logistics infrastructure.

The conversation between Putin and Macron lasted 2 hours and 10 minutes, BFM journalist Patrick Sos said earlier.

At the end of April, the French leader discussed the situation in Ukraine with President Volodymyr Zelensky, the conversation lasted about an hour. Macron said that a total of 615 tons of equipment was transferred to Kyiv, and promised during his second presidential term to increase the volume of supplies of military and humanitarian supplies. Before, he said that France was ready to become a security guarantor for Ukraine, subject to the withdrawal of Russian troops from its territory.

Security guarantees for Ukraine became one of the requirements of Kyiv in negotiations with Moscow, the first rounds of meetings of delegations were held at the end of February in Belarus. The parties achieved the greatest progress a month later, during a meeting in Istanbul's Dolmabahce Palace.

Putin called the results of the meeting a breakthrough. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at the end of the talks that they had given a significant “impetus to the peace process.” The head of the Russian delegation, Vladimir Medinsky, said that Moscow had taken “two huge steps towards peace.”

After the events in the city of Bucha, the Ukrainian side reported a change in the emotional background at the talks. “It leaves a certain imprint,” — said adviser to the head of the office of the Ukrainian president Mikhail Podolyak, explaining that the country's residents have become more negative about any negotiation concept.
