A polar bear wounded in Dixon is on the mend. This was reported in the press service of the Moscow Zoo. The animal began to show activity in movements and tends to move around the enclosure, choosing the most convenient and soft place. Employees of the Moscow Zoo also note an improvement in his appetite.

Earlier, during the examination, the animal was found to have multiple gunshot wounds of different diameters — about 25-30 holes. Head of Rosprirodnadzor Svetlana Radionovawrote in her telegram channel that they were shots with buckshot.

“After a thorough examination and computed tomography, the diagnosis of veterinarians is as follows: the bear has multiple wounds from shot, including in the head, chest cavity, soft tissues and spine. There are signs of a strong side impact: extensive myositis and broken ribs. Most likely, he was hit by a car, — wrote Radionova.

The bear is under the constant supervision of veterinarians. Previously, he underwent CT or MRI diagnostics. As the results of the examination showed, metal was found in the chest cavity, the head and spine were hit. The doctors also identified extensive myositis — presumably from a side impact. The final verdict will be made by a neurologist on September 12, the doctor will conduct an examination and tell you what you can count on.

What kind of help is given to the animal now?

The bear was under anesthesia for a long time. Therefore, the operation was decided to be postponed in order to stabilize his condition. At the zoo, the bear receives antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Why did the bear's hind legs fail?

The animal's hind legs are still inactive, the condition is assessed as extremely serious. One of the likely causes of paresis of the hind limbs, experts call swelling of the spinal cord.

“If this is the case, then the prognosis for the bear’s condition will be better than if a bullet is found in his spine. Conclusions can be drawn after the doctors compare the dynamics of x-rays, — Zoo director Svetlana Akulova said.

The animal constantly licks its hind legs, which may indicate that the sensitivity of the limbs has been preserved.

What does a bear eat at the zoo?

The animal's diet consists of meat, fish, eggs and oatmeal. Antibiotics and painkillers are dissolved in fish oil.

“Zoologists, together with veterinarians, have developed a diet in such a way that food gives the bear all the necessary macro- and microelements, but would not adversely affect the gastrointestinal tract. Two feeders are used for feeding: one for antibiotics and painkillers dissolved in fish oil, the second — for a mixture of oatmeal in beef broth and meat with quail eggs, », — Akulova wrote on her telegram channel.

According to the director of the zoo, the total amount that the bear eats per day, — three to four liters of porridge, additionally — rabbit or fish.
